Two Basic Rhinoplasty Procedures
Two Basic Rhinoplasty Procedures
The nose remodeling operation can be divided into two types
of surgery. open (external) and closed (internal) nose correction.
In summary, the term open rhinoplasty describes the surgical
technique in which an external incision is made in the area between the two
nostrils. With closed nose correction, all cuts are made in the nose structure.
This depends on the surgeon's preference and experience of
the technique he applies to a particular case.
With an open nose correction, the horizontal incision of the
skin makes it easier to see and reach the cartilage of the tip of the nose. The
advantage of open (external) rhinoplasty is the improved access to certain nose
structures. On the negative side is the small outer incision and the potential
for slight scars.
A closed nose correction takes place completely in the nose
without external incision. This procedure requires more technical and manual
skill than the open procedure.
Open and closed procedures have been used by plastic
surgeons for decades.
With an open rhinoplasty, the surgeon can make cartilage and
other structures in the nose more visible than with a closed access. It can
also make changes easier with more control and accuracy. In fact, some changes
can only be made with the open nose correction procedure.
Open rhinoplasty is generally chosen for more complex
procedures, such as pronounced nasal structure, and more complex nasal
deformities, such as cleft lip rhinoplasty.
Other more common methods by which cosmetic surgeons may
choose to have open rhinoplasty include the treatment of a bulbous, drooping,
drooping, pinched or protruding tip.
Closed nose corrections are usually chosen for small changes
that can be made without direct access and visualization through the incision
beyond the nose.
In the closed nose correction, also called endonasal
rhinoplasty, all cuts are made in the nose. The entire operation is performed
through tight openings in the nostrils. The plastic surgeon faces significant
challenges and technical limitations caused by reduced surgical access. This is
especially true for more complex nose correction procedures.
Closed nose surgery has the advantage of a shorter duration
of surgery, less swelling and faster healing. There is also no scar on the
outside of the nose. The disadvantages are the lack of access to the structure
offered by the open rhinoplasty approach and the reduced direct visibility.
If your surgeon opts for an open rhinoplasty and you fear
scars, ask before and after the pictures.
The most important factor to consider when choosing an open
or closed rhinoplasty is the comfort and experience of the surgeon. As a
patient, you have to choose a plastic surgeon that you respect and trust. The
surgeon then chooses the most appropriate way to approach your particular
situation. Follow her example and you'll be more pleased to be satisfied with
the results of your rhinoplasty.
